GSM VoIP Call for 3GPP Standard

    February 10th, 2006

Ericsson and VimpelCom have become the first company to demonstrate 3GPP standard based compressed speech and signaling over IP in a commercial GSM network.

In December 2005, first call was made between Yekaterinburg and Nizhniy Tagil in the new VimpelCom coverage area. It is a state of the art technology which would be launched across the whole region in February 2006.

We know that speech compression over all-IP is the fundamental first step in the migration to an efficient IP network apart from the fact that it greatly reduces transmission requirements. In this case, this was made possible with Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch Solution.
